"The fact is, you have the most wonderful piece of property for a golf course I have ever seen.... the topography of your property is unexcelled anywhere. It is unfortunate more clusters of trees were not left. That however, is simply a matter of landscape and not a detriment to the playing features. In its present condition, I would say you shouldn't try to even hold a state championship or district tournament at your course. It would spoil its reputation. With changes made and your turf built up, it would be one of the very best courses in the country for a national championship meet: in fact, there would be no better course anywhere."

Donald Ross, 1920

Muskegon Country Club's beauty certainly comes from its rolling terrain and fescue-lined fairways. This Donald Ross gem is as enjoyable to play as it is to view. At 6,697 yards from the back tees, the golf course is relatively short, which makes it very playable for the average player, but the approach shots and difficult greens will challenge even the best players in the country. Muskegon Country Club, in true Donald Ross fashion, will reward the good shots and penalize the poor ones. There are no secrets out there, the course and its challenges are right in front you.

For a little history, Muskegon Country Club was originally laid out by Thomas Bendelow in 1908. In 1920, it was redesigned and renumbered by renowned golf course architect Donald Ross. In recent years, the course has undergone a few different changes and renumbering schemes but has focused on retaining its roots.

In 2011, Golfweek editor and Donald Ross Society expert Brad Klein walked the property and passed along his wealth of knowledge on how to get Muskegon Country Club back to its original setting. With the golf course as good as it's ever been, Muskegon Country Club is excited for what the future has in store and all of the good golf ahead.

A challenge awaits you every day at Muskegon Country Club!
